For the next version of Squeak (3.10), Prof Ralph Johnson came up with the idea of changing the way Squeak currently searches for previous versions of methods. The essential idea is to maintain the method source code in an external database so as to get the best of both worlds: shipping with empty changes files (making for smaller releases) and enabling developers to use the changes files in a meaningful way; and preserving previous versions to ensure availability of source code for reference for those interested.
