TextbooksTextbooks used in this class1. "Squeak by Example", available for free from, or you can buy a regular book. 2. "Design Patterns: Elements of Reusable Object-Oriented Software" by Erich Gamma, Ralph Johnson, Richard Helm and John Vlissides ISBN 0-201-63361-2 3. "Smalltalk Best Practice Patterns" by Kent Beck ISBN 0-13-476904-X You can usually get better prices for the last two online, but the local bookstores will have them. You can read the first on-line, and it isn't going to be that useful once you learn Smalltalk, but you can buy a paper version if you want. "Smalltalk Best Practice Patterns" is short and won't take much time to read. Although you should read it, it is a good idea to share with a friend. "Design Patterns" is a classic, and you will want to own your own copy. If you grow to love Smalltalk as much as I do, then I strongly recommend "The Design Patterns Smalltalk Companion". As you become a Smalltalker, you will grow to prefer this one over the original "Design Patterns" book because all of the examples are in Smalltalk (without any annoying C++)! Many of the chapters are available online from the authors, so you can try the book out for free first. Maurice Rabb |
